The young, 20-something, lady was leaving her fitness "Boot Camp" when she turned an eye toward my ride.
"Is that the new Volvo?" she asked.
Well, one of them, I said.
"My parents love Volvos. They've had several. This one looks really cool."
OK, so after initially getting past the fact that she was way more interested in the Volvo than me, I realized that her comment came as a bit of a surprise.
Are Gen Xers outside of Sweden really interested in Volvos? I had thought these sturdy, snow-loving vehicles would be more appealing to the rugged, mountain types who strapped skis on their backs and drove their team of Alaskan Huskies out onto the frozen tundra for a little month-long bivwack.
However, while driving the XC70 on my daily duties, I found that it is great for urban-dwelling dog lovers as well. The XC70's wide tailgate opens easily and low, giving young and aging pups an easier entry than other wagons.
The seats fold flat with ease, and plenty of hooks surround the rear area for securing crates and other cargo.
Behind the wheel, the XC70 is a pleasure to drive. The in-line V6 engine produces a throaty roar and lots of bite (238 horsepower) to back up that bark.
As a DogCar, Volvo is definitely man's best friend. The automaker offers a whole host of specially made crates and barriers that fit perfectly into the XC70. And Animal Fair Magazine even named Volvo as the "Pet-Friendly Automobile of 2008" in a reader's survey.
So it's not just the Gen Xers who are eyeing the Volvo family, it's everyone who travels with a four-legged family member.
Viva Volvo!

Carguy Comments: The Volvo XC70 features a 3.2-liter, in-line 6-cylinder engine that produces 235 horsepower and gets fuel economy of 15/22 mpg. With all-wheel-drive instant traction and hill decent assist, the XC70 well-suited for off-roading. Cargo capacity with the seats down is 72.1 cubic feet.
Barking Lot Banter: With a nod from the younger generation, the Volvo nameplate has become the style and functional choice for dog lovers everywhere.
Comments
two full size crates in the cargo area with the back seats in place, what other “car” can do that?

My family has two Volvo a Volvo XC70 and a Volvo XC90! My family personally XC70 is better cause the car body isn’t as high so our two German Shepherds don’t have to jump so high but XC90 is great too! Our GSD love both!

XC70 plus 2 boxers, also. Add a net behind the 2nd seat row and a full size cushion and we’re off!

I have a Volvo XC70 and two boxers. We love the wagon and affectionately call it “The Pooch Mobile.” The 2nd row seat has only been up on a few rare occasions, otherwise it lays flat for “the boys.”
