The La Costa Resort and Spa in Carlsbad, California was the scene for the media launch of the new Suzuki XL7, a midsize crossover SUV that provides greater size and more power than the previous generation.

But despite the resort’s luxurious and serene surroundings, the XL7 came ready to work. With a 3.6-liter, V6 engine that produces 252 horsepower, the XL7 packs plenty of punch to get you to where you want to go without draining you fuel budget along the way.

As the Japanese automaker’s flagship SUV, the XL7 provides features more style, comfort and safety features than one might come to from a manufacturer that was previously known more for its motorcycles than its cars.

For doggie doings, the XL7’s second and third row seats fold flat, as does the front passenger seat, for flexibility when securing crates and carrying cargo. The total maximum cargo capacity for the XL7 is an impressive 95 cubic inches, with towing capacity equally impressive at 3,500 pounds.

Safety was clearly a high priority for the Suzuki engineer when designing the XL7, with rollover sensing, electronic stability traction control and side curtain airbags to help keep your loved ones safe and secure on the road.

But perhaps the most attractive part of the XL7 is the price, which starts at $22,899 for the base model and tops out at $27,949 for the feature-packed XL7 limited.

Wikipedia is a bit off in that definition. XL7 was definitely based off the Theta platform, however the Theta platform was co-developed by both GM and Suzuki engineers, not just GM.
For 2006 and later models, Suzuki and GM had already started to part ways, so Suzuki went on to develop it’s own SUV platform and GM turned to its Korean Daewoo division for the 2006+ Theta variant.
Suzuki discontinued the theta platform for its Grand Vitara, and instead devolped its own platfrom with the same Suzuki engineers that designed the Theta platform.
The new Suzuki platform for the Grand Vitara (2006 and up) only used a few GM suspension parts, but is NOT a Theta platform or even related to it.
The Theta based Suzuki XL7 is now discontinued and Suzuki is working on a new XL7 based on the Suzuki Kizashi platform, so the new XL7 will be Suzuki based and sourced.
Since Suzuki has discontinued selling GM and Daewoo re-badges, Suzuki reliability ratings have shot way up, so much so that for 2008/2009 Suzuki got the “most improved reliability” award. In fact, the 2008/2009 Suzuki SX4 beat all other cars in it’s segment for reliability, with the fewest needed repairs, beating honda, toyota, nissan, etc.
In addition to this, Suzuki also got the “Most Improved Re-Sale Value” for 2008/2009, putting Suzuki up right between honda and Toyota for resale value.

From Wikipoedia: “The 2007 Suzuki XL7 is based on the Theta platform and is built alongside the Equinox and Torrent at CAMI Automotive in Ingersoll, Ontario, Canada. It is the first non-GM branded vehicle to come off the Theta platform. Styled by Suzuki, the engineering was performed by GM engineers in the US and Canada.”
