Does anybody really use these pretty, upscale SUVs for doing anything except impressing other people and hauling 1.7 kids to soccer? I mean, really, what good is having a vehicle that appears designed for hauling things if there isn’t any room for putting things in it?
Case in point: The Nissan Murano (although it’s certainly not the only vehicle with such problems). The Murano looks nice, with its aerodynamically clean, round lines (although honestly, its rear-end over-emphasizes my own, making it a vehicle that makes my butt look big). And you can’t fault it on comfort, at least not in the tricked-out upgraded version I’ve been test-driving. Handling seems a little on the wallowy side, somewhere between the sportiness of a crossover like the Acura RDX and the smoothness of a land yacht like the Volvo XC90.
As someone who has lived in Sacramento almost all her life, I can tell you there’s little virtue in being halfway: We’re always touted as being “halfway to everywhere” — San Francisco, Tahoe, the wine country, etc. — but what that really means is that we’re nowhere at all, and that’s what the Murano felt like to me. It’s a vehicle that doesn’t handle as sharply as some, and isn’t as smooth as others. Still, it’s a comfortable and attractive vehicle, reasonably priced for its luxuries ($42,500 for the all-bling model I drove) with decent, if not impressive fuel economy (19/24).
OK, but here’s my beef: The cargo space is not particularly conducive to hauling of safely crated dogs. A plus for the Murano: Dropping the seats was terrifically easy, and the folded seats were flat as Kansas.
But … my one big crate wouldn’t fit vertically, although there is enough horizontal room for the smaller side-by-sides to fit … sort of. With the Murano’s sloping rear hatch, I had to push the one side-by-side I did end up using up against the front seats to get the hatch to close. (That old square peg and round hole problem I first encountered in the ) The image shows the problem — rounded spaces, square crates. Next!
Finally verdict: Not a bad vehicle, by any means, but not a great dogmobile.

Carguy Comments:The 2007 Nissan Murano features a standard 240-horsepower, 3.5-liter V-6 engine with continuously variable transmission. It was named the best Midsize Multi-Activity Vehicle in J. D. Power and Associates’ Automotive Performance, Execution and Layout study. Cargo capacity is 81.6 cubic feet with the second row seat folded flat.

Nissan Murano: High on comfort and style
Barking Lot Banter: It’s always tough to be the middle child, and that’s where the Nissan Murano sits on the dogcar continuum. It’s neither a big SUV nor is it a compact sedan or station wagon. The Murano is perfect for plenty of people who enjoy moderate size at a decent value.

I bought my 2007 Murano SPECIFICALLY b/c of the dogs. I needed something with lots of room yet easy to get into for a big ‘ol yellow dog who has had multiple knee surgeries. Just drove it to Washing State and back…
comfort – yep
comfort for me – yep
decent mileage – yep Love it!

We are on a our second Murano and you can not ask for a better car for how the seat lay down flat giving our pet the max room to roam in the back or to lay on the front middle arm rest with us on his pillow.

My dogs love my 2008 Murano! The rear seat is very comfortable and the ride is very smooth. I used to have a honda accord that they used to hate before.

I can’t believe the rating!!! I bought this car with my dogs in mind. The back seats are super easy to fold down and they lay completely flat(a must for dog owners). There is enough space for two large dogs. The front middle arm rest is a wonderful spot for my dogs…I put a pillow on it and they take turns laying their head on it to rest beside me. I haven’t found one other luxury SUV that offered as many dog friendly features.
