Every DogCar has its perfect dog, and the three-ton-plus beast that is the GMC Sierra 2500 HD Crew Cab has a very small dog indeed:

A Jack Russell terrier.

Why a JRT? Because the little terrier with the biggest heart of all is the darling of the horsey set, a necessary accessory to anyone who spend the night before the weekend throwing English saddles into the cargo bay of a four-horse trailer. A trailer that costs more than my first house -- much, much more than my current house, in fact, if you figure in the market value of a quartet of top show jumpers.)

The Sierra has the horses to haul horses -- and the comforts to make the trip to the show a pleasure. But it's not something you'll want to be driving around town unless you plan on avoiding all narrow residential streets and parking spaces.

With more than three tons of curb weight and a cab so high off the ground that I almost broke my ankle falling out of it, the Sierra isn't the perfect daily driver. The truck is so large that it registers as a commercial vehicle, so GMC doesn't have to tell us the gas mileage. This is just as well, because if you have to ask what it costs to fill up its capacious tank, you can’t afford to.

So now that we've established the parameters, how do we like the horse-hauling Sierra? For what it is, we like it a lot.

Once you've taken the leap high into the cab, you'll like it there, with seats among the most comfortable around. I took a two-hour round trip with show dog Woody the retriever and we both found the highway easy going. Watch those semi-truck-style mirrors, though, because you won't be able to see anything below or around you without them.

The Sierra has lots of power, and it's easy to imagine it wouldn't have any problem at all pulling most any load over anything. So if that's what you're looking for, this one's for you.

And your little dog, too.

Carguy Comments:The GMC Sierra Heavy Duty comes in two model choices: a three-quarter ton (2500HD) or one ton (3500HD) versions and is available in WT, SLE and SLT trims. The range of configurations – three cab styles, three cargo box styles and five wheelbase lengths – delivers variety for heavy duty truck buyers. Maximum towing capacity is 16,700 pounds, enough to tow a fifth-wheel mobile home. The standard engine is a 6.0-liter V-8 with variable valve timing, providing a best-in-class 353 horsepower. A cleaner, more powerful Duramax 6.6-liter turbo-diesel engine, with 365 horsepower, is also available.

Plenty of horses to haul horses

Barking Lot Banter: Got a small cavalry to move? Have a house to haul? Then you might want to check out the GMC Sierra 2500 HD crew cab. With more horses under the hood than a Texas rancher, this brute can do it all without sacrificing the comfort or amenities found in most luxury sedans.

I have the 3500 HD 2008

I got the rear window sliding option for the dogs.

The seats fold up much better in this years model. Plenty of room for the dogs to stretch out and sleep on those long trips, or room for two crates.

Wonderful for my road trips to horse shows and dog shows.

I love this truck!!!!

I made a carpeted platform for my rear seat that makes a level bed for my 114 pound Lab. The only problem is the high entry / exit.

I have the 1500, but it is surprisingly roomy. When I fold the back seat up, I can fit four Border Collie sized crates in the back. I stack two on each side.

The gas bill hurts, but you can’t beat the back seat of the 4 door crew cab folding completely flat, giving a German Shepherd tons of room to sprawl out and still have room for luggage and gear. This truck rides like a dream and the seat is just as comfortable as my recliner. Short bed easily accommodates 4 extra large dog crates.
